The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his victims, was convicted of raping his nieces, aged 10 and eight years, after luring them to his room at Ntsingizi village.
According to Women’s Rights Association’s spokesman, Nomawethu Ndlangamandla, children in rural areas often do not get the justice they deserve because of how ‘rape culture’ is treated in these areas.
“We often come across situations in which children are raped by their relatives and everything is swept under the carpet or discussed between the families.”
Mrs Ndlangamandla said the days when rapists were ordered to pay for their crimes with cows or goats were over, as justice was prevailing and children were becoming more knowledgeable on how to handle such incidents.
Police spokesman Brigadier Mtutuzeli Mtukushe has welcomed the sentence.
