WARNING: Police ‘jobs for sale’ are a scam

This sort of scam is targeting young people who are currently unemployed.

Police have warned that job scamsters are again taking advantage of the desperate.

A 22-year-old man last Thursday reported to Hibberdene police that he had been conned out of R2 000.

Police spokesman, Captain Petros Mpinge, said the man claimed to have received a call from a person pretending to be a police officer, who told him employment was being offered at a local police station.

The man was instructed to deposit money into a bank account in order to secure the job, which he did.

“The conman also asked the man to provide his full details and instructed him to meet another police officer at the police station. However, this person did not exist. It was only then that the man realised he had been defrauded.”

A similar incident was reported the following day by another young man who had received a telephone call from someone who knew his personal details and told him that he had passed his police psychometric test.

He became suspicious and reported this to the police.

“We wish to stress that jobs are not for sale. No cash has to be paid when application is done for advertised posts. The public must be aware of scams which target young people who are currently unemployed,” said Captain Mpinge.
