10 South Coast political killings among those to be probed by police minister

Although no one had been convicted, the minister said he was confident that progress made so far would mark the end of such brutal killings.

Police minister Bheki Cele’s stern talk last Thursday declared KwaZulu-Natal’s reputation for political killings would soon be a thing of the past.

Mr Cele was speaking in Durban recently, alongside defence minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and others.

Although Mr Cele expressed his concern at the increase in crime as reflected in the latest statistics, he said the time for politicians being killed was drawing to a close.

More than 10 political murders had been reported on the South Coast alone.

Although no one had been convicted, the minister said he was confident that progress made so far would mark the end of such brutal killings.

“Cold cases have been revived and people have been taken into custody. One person‚ linked to the murder of a councillor in the Nyembe area, has also been linked to six other murders elsewhere in the province.

“Kusho ukuthi izinkabi,” (they are hitmen), he said.

Lower South Coast Region ANC branch members said it was time for the minister to act and ensure that those responsible for the death of their comrades were locked away.

Meanwhile Mr Cele issued assurances that the arrests made so far would not be the only ones.

Earlier this year, political killings had been probed by the Moerane Commission of Inquiry.

According to the minister, the commission’s report had been completed and was expected to be released by the end of the month.
