Woman (49) drowns near Margate fishing pier

She appeared to have been been caught in the rip currents.

A woman believed to be from Boksburg drowned near the Margate fishing pier yesterday (Sunday) at about 2pm.

According to Jeremiah Jackson, NSRI Shelly Beach station commander, duty crew were activated following reports  of a drowning received from Ray Nkonyeni Municipal Protection Services.

“Our sea rescue vehicle with NSRI rescue swimmers onboard responded and Police Search and Rescue, Tower 13 Lifeguards, Fire and Rescue Services and Med-Evac ambulance services responded.

“The 49-year-old woman was found in the shallow surf. She had been caught in rip currents south of the Margate fishing pier, an area not protected by duty lifeguards, before currents swept her to the beach where Tower 13 lifeguards pulled her from the water and initiated CPR. However, despite all efforts, the woman was declared dead,” said Mr Jackson.
