The teen told a friend, who told her own mother and the police were contacted.

A young girl’s life was shattered when a close family friend, a colleague of one of her parents, raped her on October 29, 2009 when she was just 15 years old.

After nine long years and an appeal, her attacker has finally been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment.

It was heard in court that the man had driven from Margate, Extension Three to Bizana to drop off a document.

The girl’s father worked in Bizana and, seeing this as an opportunity to see him, she was persuaded to accompany the man.

On the way back from Bizana, the man stopped in a bushy area a few kilometres from Margate, where he raped her.

He then dropped her off at her home, assuring everyone that the trip had gone well.

The teen told a friend, who told her own mother and the police were contacted.

After an extensive investigation and several court appearances, the man was found guilty of rape and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The case went to the High Court on appeal, before being transferred to another court.

On August 23, the Ezingolweni Magistrate’s Court imposed a 20-year sentence on the convicted rapist.

The investigating officer, Captain Mandla Cele of Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Margate, was praised for his professional handling of the case.
