WATCH: ‘Let ganja growers go’, say Rastafarians

It is understood that the protest concerns several men arrested by the Port Shepstone Hawks, assisted by the National Intervention Unit, earlier this year after they were found in possession of 1 646 dagga plants and a hydroponic dagga laboratory.

While many have welcomed the Constitutional Court ruling on the partial decriminalisation of dagga in South Africa, at the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Wednesday) the Port Shepstone Cannabis Club arrived in their numbers to show support for those who were still being detained despite last Tuesday’s ruling.

“Those who are appearing in court today are not criminals. They are farmers and they must be set free. It is not a crime any more and we Rastafarians have fought for the legalisation of dagga for a long time.

“It is against their constitutional rights to still be held captive over something that is now legal,” said club member, Christine Ngandu.
