‘Bush loo’ at Port Shepstone beachfront on Heritage Day
The women's section of the toilets was locked and completely inaccessible, while the men's section had only one operating toilet, and that was in an appalling state, with not a toilet roll in sight.
Visitors to the Port Shepstone beachfront are, they say, often forced to relieve themselves in the bush due to ablution facilities at the beach not being in working order.

Heritage Day, celebrated on Monday this week and also known as Braai Day, saw many flock to the beachfront with their meat and salads, intent on enjoying the public holiday.

However they were shocked to find that the women’s section of the toilets was locked and completely inaccessible, while the men’s section had only one operating toilet, and that was in an appalling state, with not a toilet roll in sight.
A regular beachgoer from Gamalakhe said she had not been at all surprised by the state of the toilets as it was a regular occurrence.
“Well, at least there’s one toilet open today; sometimes they are all locked and we are told the keys are with the workers, who are nowhere to be found,” said the woman.
She wondered if it were safe for both women and men to use the same toilet.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality municipal manager, Max Mbili, said the municipality had not been aware of the problem, adding that the matter would be referred to the head of department in charge of the ablution facilities.
