Hibberdene Happenings: ‘King of the Coast’ to be crowned this weekend
Portions of potjie will be sold afterwards for R25 a plate, with proceeds going to the SPCA.
THE postponed ‘King of the Coast’ potjiekos competition now takes place at the Hibberdene Beach Hotel this Sunday, September 30. Please note the change of venue from the Blue Waters Pub and Grill, otherwise everything remains the same as before. Entry fee is R100 for a family and R300 for a company or business and portions of potjie will be sold afterwards for R25 a plate. Fires will be lit as early as 7am and the food will be available for tasting from about 1pm. There will be raffles and lots of prizes on offer. Stallholders are invited to pop along and display their wares. All proceeds go to the SPCA, so please join in and support this worthy cause. For more information, contact Marlene at 084 7951579.

Be wary
Burglars appear to have been active in Hibberdene over the weekend, with reports being received of at least one house having been broken into last Friday night. Please be alert at all times.
Pothole predicament
Besides thieves, potholes appear to be rife in town and appear to get worse the further one moves away from the town centre. No attempt seems to be made to sort them out, so maybe residents should take matters into their own hands and start filling potholes themselves?
Welcome back
Olive and John Mett from Middlesborough, UK, are spending some time at their holiday home in Leisuredene Village and are warmly welcomed. Unfortunately for avid bowler John, the local bowling green is due to close for annual spring treatment shortly, but no doubt he will find a green close by to utilise.
TLC
Readers may remember a tiny scrap of a kitten rescued in Port Edward, featured in scribe Philippa Makepeace’s news a few months ago?
Well, little Rocky has blossomed into a most handsome chap and is doing well. Your scribe saw photos of him when his new owner Danette Stewart of Leisure Bay visited the eye clinic last week.
It is amazing what a little bit of tender loving care can do.
Eye clinic
The next, (and penultimate for the year) eye clinic will be held on October 17 at noon. Appointments may be made with your scribe at the supplied number or at 073 1653961.
Support the drive
Lions’ Christmas cakes are on sale and can be purchased for R110 at the clinic on a Wednesday morning. They are delicious and, as an added bonus, keep very well. After its successful food collection for Mandela Day, the Lions Club has decided to continue with an ongoing drive to collect food for needy families. Donations for this drive and for the Spring Fair may also be dropped off at the clinic, as may packets of bread sealers – no matter how big or small.
Plan ahead
Just over a week to go before the Spring Fair and Mtwalume craft market. Both events have been extensively publicised over the last few weeks and everyone is urged to put in an appearance and start stocking up on Christmas gifts.

Good luck
Marthie and Willie Loots of Hibberdene River Resort have, for personal reasons, relocated to Gauteng to be closer to their family. They will be greatly missed, having played an integral part in the running of the resort, as both homeowners and trustees on the body corporate. They are wished well in their new surroundings.
Sad tidings
It was with sadness that your scribe learnt of the recent death of Pam Schutte from the Southport area. Pam had made an appointment for last week’s eye clinic and when her granddaughter called the day before clinic, she assumed it was to confirm the booking and not to give news of Pam’s death.
Happy occasions
Birthday wishes for this week go to Brian Balfour (25th), David Rush (sports editor at the Herald), Joan Nortjé, Jill Whitmore and Barry Jones (26th), Isobel McManus (28th), Arthur Seager (29th), Tommy Allan (October 1) and Joey Daniels (October 2). Happy anniversary goes to Eleanor and Ken Walker (28th) and Jenny and Pottie Potgieter (29th).
Remember to keep Lizzie busy with Hibberdene news and snippets.
