Affected parties with objections include not only the hospitality industry, small businesses active on the coast, and recreational fishing industries, but also subsistence fishermen, ordinary residents, and the younger generation affected by climate change and other environmentalists.

Desmond D’sa of South Durban Community Environmental Alliance said the environmental impact assessment (EIA) that is now being conducted is extremely important for the Indian Ocean’s safety.

Take note of the two meetings this week:

* Engaging and commenting on the oil and gas exploration – education workshop for the public at Gate Ministries, 2 Station Road, Port Shepstone on Thursday, October 4 at 5pm.

* Public participation meeting – (EIA for exploration drilling within offshore block ER236, KZN) at Venture Inn, 366 Commercial Road, Umtentweni, Port Shepstone on Wednesday, October 10 from 3pm to 6pm.
