Sad tidings
Vanessa and Sean Murray relocated to Leisure Bay about three years ago and soon and worked tirelessly in the conservation group ‘Looking After Leisure Bay’, as well as the local neighbourhood watch.

On Monday morning (October 1) Sean, who recently turned fifty, died of a suspected heart attack. Condolences are extended to Vanessa and the family. Peter Swanepoel (74), beloved husband of Anne, father of Kylene and Warren, grandfather to Skye, Cara, Devon and Nathan, sadly died on September 26.

Peter had just undergone surgery at St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban and suffered a heart attack soon afterwards.

Peter and Anne arrived in Port Edward in 1975 and bought Banners Rest Trading Store, which was their home for 27 years before they retired to Margate. A memorial service will be held at Port Edward Methodist Church this Friday, October 5th, at 1pm. No flowers or donations.

Back home
Welcome home to Louis and Pat Fourie of Mbabala Lodge, Munster. The ‘fabled Fouries’ are known for their wanderlust, regular travels and adventures in far-off, interesting places. The intrepid travellers have just returned from a wonderful two-week camping trip in their rooftop tent in the Kgalagadi Trans-Frontier Park, a beautiful game reserve in the Northern Cape, wedged between Botswana and Namibia. En route they spent a night in Twee Riviere, then went on to Mata Mata and Nossob camps. They also spent a week in the Wildernis camps Polentswa and Rooiputs in the Botswana region of the park. They enjoyed wonderful sightings of lions, cheetah, leopard and wild cat. On the way home they spent two nights in Upington and a week with their children and grandchildren in the Free State. Pat says “We love to travel and visit new places, but also love coming home to all our friends!”

Dawn’s display
Marina Beach resident Dawn Broom (82) is a passionate artist with her own unique style of vibrant splashes of colour and abstract compositions. She opened her home and studio last Saturday to share her artwork. Visitors commented on her charm, hospitality and bold style of painting that reflects Dawn’s ‘joie de vivre’.

Mystery speaker
The Trafalgar Garden Club held its September meeting at the lovely, expansive Southbroom home and garden of local frog expert Sharlene Slikke. The huge garden invites visitors to explore winding lawns edged with palm trees, tree-ferns and all manner of leafy wonders. A large pond is home to about 40 large koi fish and, no doubt, many happy frogs. Sharlene had organised a ‘mystery speaker’ and members were enthralled to meet Prince Shaka, the expert presently in charge of the Butterfly Dome at Mac Banana Estate. He explained the importance of butterflies in nature and warned against the use of pesticides in gardens. His mantra is ‘share your gardens with nature, be that frog, caterpillar or mole. There is enough to share with all nature’s creatures!’

Wrap up
Experts predict that the coldest winter spell of the year will settle on the Drakensberg and Lesotho today (Wednesday). Snow is expected on the Southern Drakensberg, Matatiel, KZN Midlands and then the Northern Drakensberg by tomorrow. No doubt we will feel the frigid effects of this cold front on the coast so, pull out the winter woollies that you just packed away!
