Professor Brooksbank’s talk entitled ‘Ma’s Laces’ tells the story of how his great-grandmother Louise Lienaux-Vergauwe created six unique, exquisite pieces of lacework as a way of expressing her pride in Belgium, her anger at the German occupation and most importantly, her desperation and grief at being separated from her two young children.

Professor Brooksbank was born in the UK and emigrated to South Africa in 1982.

For the last 24 years he has worked as an academic at the University of the Witwatersrand and is currently an associate professor in the school of Physiology at Wits Medical School.
