Scottburgh police prayer circle celebrates seventh anniversary

Pastors from various churches in the area take turns to officiate at prayer meetings.

Seven years ago, a prayer circle was formed to pray for the safety and wellbeing of the Scottburgh Saps members.

It all started when Averil Bennewith of Pennington approached the then Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum and told him that she was concerned about the number of violent attacks on police and police killings.

After consultations with the former station commander, Colonel Praga Naicker, the Scottburgh Saps Prayer Circle was created and prayer was observed on the third Wednesday of every month.

“The conference hall was – and always is – filled to capacity with regular attendance by some members of the public and members of the Scottburgh Saps,” said Captain Pandarum. “Pastors from the various churches in the area also take turns to officiate at prayer meetings.”

The prayer circle’s seventh anniversary was celebrated on September 26, the same day as Captain Pandarum’s 60th birthday and his retirement from Saps.

The officiating pastor was Dominee Pieter Grobler and also attending were Pastors Christoff Smit, Jan Ferreira, Willie Botha and Mary Ann de Kock.

“A celebratory atmosphere prevailed and the three-in-one function culminated in all enjoying a savoury spread followed by pudding and soft drinks,” said Captain Pandarum.

The station commander, Colonel Ralph Ruiters, was grateful to all who attended the day’s events and showed his appreciation to Averil and Ivan Bennewith as well as all the pastors who had officiated at the prayer meetings since day one.
