Former admin manager, Riana Kuilder (42), was sentenced recently in the Port Shepstone Regional Court.
The charges stemmed from the period March 2013 to May 2014 when Kuilder was employed at Abingdon Road Spar in Umtentweni.

During this period, Kuilder, who lives in Hibberdene, stole an amount of R65 270 from her employer by making false entries on the petty cash schedules and pocketing the cash.
She received three years of correctional supervision which consists of:
a) House arrest and supervision by a correctional services officer for the entire period of three years;
b) Community service, without remuneration, of 16 hours a month for the entire period of three years;
c) Repayment, in monthly installments, of the R65 270 stolen from Bastian Heilbron, former owner of Abingdon Road Spar.
A further two years’ imprisonment was suspended for five years.
The court found that she had abused the trust of her employer and had had ample opportunity to reflect on what she was doing but had continued stealing on 52 occasions over a period of 15 months.
She had shown no remorse whatsoever.
Regional Magistrate Johann Bester said that, ordinarily, she would have been imprisoned but it was decided to impose a non-custodial sentence because she is the primary caregiver of a 13-year-old child and the court was obliged to bear in mind the best interests of the child.
