New trauma unit for Scottburgh’s GJ Crookes Hospital
The facility boasts world-class equipment.
OFFICIALLY opened on September 25, a R165-million trauma unit at GJ Crookes Hospital in Scottburgh will feature state of the art services.
KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, unveiled the facility, which not only boasts world-class equipment but also a casualty unit.
According to MEC Dhlomo, these additions to the government-run GJ Crookes Hospital, will put it on par with hospitals in the private sector. Noting the high number of accidents on the N2 near the hospital, MEC Dhlomo highlighted that these facilities would come in handy.

“Between Port Shepstone and Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospitals (50km away), you need a facility like this one, to take care of patients that would otherwise have died if you were to transfer them. It sees an average of 30 trauma or poly-trauma patients per day, who can be ventilated, resuscitated and be kept here until they are stable. Some are even discharged from here or transferred,” MEC Dhlomo said.
