Museum’s official opening postponed

Even officials at RNM have no idea when the opening will take place, as the notice read that it had been postponed until “further notice”.

Despite advertisements and invitations in various media about the opening of the Port Shepstone Maritime Museum, it seems the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) in KwaZulu-Natal has once again pulled the plug at the 11th hour.

The official opening was meant to take place today (Thursday) but on Tuesday afternoon, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality sent out an apology on behalf of DAC.

Advertisements had been placed in a Durban-based newspaper and aired on various radio stations.

Even officials at RNM have no idea when the opening will take place, as the notice read that it had been postponed until “further notice”.

Proceedings of the day were to start with an exhibition at the Margate Art Museum, followed by the unveiling of the plaque at Port Shepstone Maritime Museum by KZN premier Willis Mchunu.

The main event was scheduled to take place at St Martin de Porres school’s sportsfield.

The museum, which is operating despite not being officially opened, was completed by RNM some time ago and numerous concerns had been raised about the DAC’s failure hold an official opening ceremony.

According to RNM spokesman, Simon April the official opening was coordinated by the Office of the MEC at DAC and the plan was to have both the Premier and the National Minister of Arts and Culture present at the event.

“We only received communication that said the event had been postponed until further notice. We have not been informed of the reasons.”
