The IFP said Ugu was facing this crisis because those in charge ‘see money as a means to enrich themselves rather than putting the community first’.
IFP chairman, Sifundo Ngwane, said the timing was very unfortunate, as the festive season was fast approaching.
Mr Ngwane asked how sure the municipality was that people wouldn’t be without water during the December holidays.
“This might affect our economy, businesses might be forced to close , lives at hospitals and in communities could be in great danger if this is not dealt with swiftly.”
The IFP also said Ugu had failed to provide adequate water and sanitation, and suggested all operations at the municipality be stopped.
“Grants coming from both national and provincial government should be be given directly to local municipalities to supply water to their own communities because Ugu has clearly failed.”
Mr Ngwane added that the use of municipal vehicles needed to be controlled because a substantial sum of money was spent on fuel and on vehicles that were being used for personal business, or after hours.
“The IFP also believes costs could be saved if Ugu reduced the number of bodyguards employed, corrected its billing system and did a head count on staff as we suggested in May this year.”

He questioned how leadership and officials at Ugu could ‘drive such expensive cars when their municipality was slowly dying’.
He also suggested that criminal charges be laid against officials who had allegedly stolen money from the Ugu purse before resigning.
