Drug arrests and new developments featured in this week's news.

The Crayfish Inn was destined for a revamp.

October 29

1993
“One of the South Coast’s most famous landmarks, the Crayfish Inn in Ramsgate, is to undergo a multi-million rand redevelopment.”

1999
“Members of the Port Shepstone narcotics unit and dog unit joined forces in a combined operation that resulted in 44 people being arrested for smuggling and dealing in dagga in September and October this year.”

October 30

1992
“A pilot and his passenger were injured when their light aircraft, carrying bags of money, made an emergency landing at Hibberdene on Monday morning.”

1998
The narrow-gauge railway was under threat again. “An Ugu Regional Council delegation will meet with Premier Ben Ngubane in Durban this Friday in an attempt to save the railway between Harding and Port Shepstone.”

October 31

1997
“An alert lawyer and members of the Dog Unit rounded up two thieves who stole wages from Anerley Haven last Friday.”

And it was announced that the R46-million phase three extensions to the Shelly Centre would be opened that day.

November 1

1991
“A R5-million tea processing factory in Paddock, which will generate R40- to R50-million and 1 500 new jobs in the next decade, was officially opened by the Minister of Agriculture this week.”

And police tracked down a drug peddler. “In what is believed to be the largest Mandrax haul so far on the Lower South Coast, members of the narcotics bureau, Port Shepstone, confiscated 296 tablets valued at nearly R6 000 and arrested an Umbango man last week. The arrest followed about three months of investigations after complaints were received from parents of children at a local school.”

1996
The march of progress was about to necessitate the demolition of a landmark. “Development of a restaurant, bar and take-away on the site of Margate Round Table’s 20-year-old clubhouse looks set to proceed.”

And a switching station explosion caused a blackout at Margate.

Hospice held a fishing competition and Colleen Eaton became only the third three-times winner of the Natal Ladies’ Champion of Champions gold title.

November 3

Invited to an international martial arts competition, “Ugu’s stick fighters earn gold in Korea.”
