Margate Moves: New food store opens in Margate

For many years there was talk about Woolies opening another store and now it is finally happening.

 

BIG news this week is the opening of the new Woolworths Food Store at the Hibiscus Mall. Over the past few months the shopping centre has been undergoing major changes to accommodate the new supermarket which opens its doors this Thursday, November 1. The feast day of St Andrew the patron saint of Scotland is celebrated on November 30. To mark the occasion the South Coast Caledonian Society will host a special St Andrew’s Night at Cafe Munro (Margate Retirement Village) at 6.30pm.

The society has nominated South Coast Hospice as its beneficiary and all patrons are asked to take along a toiletry gift which will be donated to the association.

Dress is formal and tickets cost R100 for members and R120 for non-members (includes a three-course meal) and a cash bar will be available. The Federation Chief of South Africa, the provincial chief and the local chief will be in attendance to welcome guests. The Margate Pipes and Drums will provide Scottish music so everyone can do a highland fling or a Gay Gordon. Tickets can be bought and booked at the Elna Shop at the Shelly Centre.

Carnival capers

Unable to get to the Rio carnival? Do not despair as Mardi Gras magic is coming to Southbroom.

Get out your party gear and enjoy a fabulous, fun street party on Friday, November 9 from 6pm. Tickets cost R180 per person which includes a three-course meal – tables, chairs and utensils will be provided – take your own drinks and glasses (ice will be available) and are on sale from the Realty 1 office.

Another date to save is December 2. That’s when Southbroom Tennis Club will hold its first advent celebration. Traditional Christmas cookies and stollen will be on sale from 4.30pm. The lighting of the Christmas tree in Eyles Park will take place at dusk.

Get quizzical

The Ramsgate Lions Club will hold its regular social/braai night at the Village Hall in Glenmarkie Road this Friday (2nd). Braai fires are lit from 6pm, so take some meat – salads are on sale and there is a cash bar available. After supper it’s time to put on those thinking caps and put your brain power to the test at the popular quiz. It is lots of fun and there are great prizes to be won by the brainiacs. Dress like Dracula

Ramsgate’s iconic music venue, Rocky Ridge, is holding a Halloween happening this Saturday (3rd). Don your spooky clobber and enjoy a fun evening with music provided by The Gentry. Entry is R100 and the venue will open from 4.30pm for those who want to watch the rugby clash between the Springboks and England on the big screen. Jacob’s Saw will be on stage for Sunday Blues this Sunday. Venue opens at midday.

Classy concert

Thanks to the Residents’ Activities’ Committee (RAC) at Margate Retirement Village South Coasters don’t have to travel to Durban to enjoy a concert by the acclaimed KZN Philharmonic Orchestra. The annual classical music treat will be staged at the Azalea Hall on Saturday, November 10. It is theatre style seating and tickets are R95 per person. Bar facilities will be available. The doors open at 6.30pm and the curtain goes up at 7pm.

Congratulations

Many happy ever afters are wished to newlyweds Shay and Christopher Mitchell who were married last Saturday. Shay is the daughter of Glen and June Smit from Southport and Chris is the son of Craig and Sandy from Bushy Vales. The reception was held at |Izotsha Creek.

Safe travels

Pat and Gordon Moody are wished bon voyage as they are off to Johannesburg for a few days before flying out to Australia for a month or three.
