Career best 190kg deadlift for Helen-Jean

The Genesis Strong Man '18 involved deadlifts (max weight), bodyweight bench (reps), DB clean and press (reps), log press, car/truck pull and a medley comprising tyre flip, farmer's carry, sled pull and boulder carry.

Strong Man ’18, hosted by Genesis Gyms, took place at the Norwegian Settlers’ Church grounds last Saturday.

Helen-Jean Stubbs won the women’s section and seems to have a very bright future in the sport.

She said said that competing in these events was always an incredible experience for her, with winning merely a byproduct of taking part.

“This year’s competition was a big one for me as I hit two life-time personal bests, one of which was a 190kg deadlift,” she said.

But it goes beyond her own interests and achievements.

“Watching so many others, especially the other female athletes, hit their own personal bests is the reason why we keep doing this – to uncover the hidden potential and showcase it on a much grander scale, other than just inside a gym.”

Helen-Jean recently placed tenth overall in the open women’s category for Static Monsters (log press and axle deadlift championships) and so has qualified to compete in the world championships in Melbourne, Australia next year.

Nkosingiphili ‘House’ Nyawose powers his way to victory at the Genesis Strong Man ’18 competition.

In the men’s section local favourite Nkosingiphile ‘House’ Nyawose edged out Sylva Naidoo for the open title, the latter who has competed in all nine Genesis Strong Man events to date.

“It feels good to win again after all the stressing and hard training. We put a lot of pressure on our bodies but it’s worth it in the end. It’s always fun playing with some heavy weights – that’s my passion,” said House.

“Knowing that I inspire and motivate other people (as I have been told) makes me feel grateful for what I have and humbled always,” he said.
