Celebrate St Andrew
Apparently the Scots adopted St Andrew as their patron saint when he appeared in a vision in 832AD to the Pictish king before the battle against the Northumbrians who were defeated. After the battle a Saltire (X-shaped) cross appeared in the sky and was adopted as Scotland’s national emblem. Andrew was a Galiliean fisherman and brother to Peter before they became apostles. Andrew, who is also the patron saint of Greece, Russia, Romania and Barbados, was crucified on an X-shaped cross.
His feast day is celebrated on November 30 and the South Coast Caledonian Society will host a special St Andrew’s Night at Cafe Munro (Margate Retirement Village) at 6.30pm.
The society has nominated South Coast Hospice as its beneficiary and all patrons are asked to take along a toiletry gift which will be donated to the association.
Dress is formal and tickets cost R100 for members and R120 for non-members (includes a three-course meal) and a cash bar will be available. The Federation Chief of South Africa, the provincial chief and the local chief will be in attendance to welcome guests. The Margate Pipes and Drums will provide traditional music. Tickets can be bought and booked at the Elna Shop at the Shelly Centre.
