No fleas, but plenty to buy at this market

The market is a must-visit, open every Saturday and Sunday.

What a joy it is to visit the Rotary Uvongo Flea market! Situated on Marine Drive, this market has been in operation for 30 years. It started on a small site overlooking the Uvongo beach, then moved in front of the current Uvongo Spar and finally, in 1998, the area opposite the Douglas Mitchell Sports Grounds became its permanent location.

Director of the market, Andre van Zyl, said several existing stall-holders have supported the market for well over 20 years. “Anita Vorster and her husband Basil have been selling children’s clothing from the inception of the flea market. Fifty percent of the stall-holders produce quality home-made goods and food and it is this that attracts so many customers on a regular basis.”

He added it is often said by visitors from up-country that the Rotary market is one of the very few left in the country where one can buy goods that are different. Today in most of the other flea markets, they say, the same goods are sold by almost every stall-holder, which is boring.

Rotary Anns (from left) Brenda Blumrick, Annetjie de Wet, Jenny McGregor, Mari Webster, Sandy Gerntholtz and Ina Delve, work hard making pancakes every weekend at the flea market with proceeds going to the Harding Special School and Cornerstone Learning Centre.

Mr van Zyl stressed that Rotary’s prime objective in supporting and sustaining the Uvongo market is to provide a place for the community to market their goods, foods and services.

“At the 160 stalls which are open every Saturday and Sunday of the year, any visitor will be in a shopping paradise. The tea garden and several other food stalls provide sustenance and the area is wheelchair friendly. Strategically placed benches and tables offer relaxation under the trees.”

Ample parking is available.
