Scottburgh man dies in freak PMB accident, wife survives

Molten wax on the road caused a bakkie to veer out of control and crash into the couple's car.

TRAGEDY struck recently when Scottburgh locals Patrick (82) and Magdalena Tomlinson (76) were involved in a car accident on the N3 outside Pietermaritzburg.

They were en route to Bloemfontein, where Mrs Tomlinson was due to compete in an athletics event.

According to reports, molten wax leaked out of a truck onto the N3 northbound at around 6am, resulting in major traffic congestion.

The Tomlinson’s vehicle had apparently broken down shortly before the wax caused a bakkie to veer out of control and crash into the couple’s car.

It was later confirmed that the Tomlinsons had been waiting for a towing service when the crash occurred.

“Both elderly occupants from the light motor vehicle were outside the car when the bakkie overturned and rolled on top of them,” said ER24 communications officer, Werner Vermaak.

The scene of the accident.

By the time emergency medical services arrived at the scene, a local towing service had already lifted the overturned bakkie off the couple. Mr Tomlinson was declared dead at the scene.

Mrs Tomlinson was treated for multiple injuries before being rushed to a nearby hospital. “The driver of the bakkie was treated for moderate injuries and later taken to hospital,” said Mr Vermaak.
