Cleaning up the coastline, bit by bit

All kinds of litter was loaded into bags and taken away for disposal.

Although the heavens opened up last Sunday, this did not stop the AfriForum Youth Beach Clean-up taking place.

Hardy young people swapped their warm blankets and cosy couches for plastic bags and windbreakers and joined in the attempt to clean up the area from Uvongo to St Mike’s beach.

From very early in the morning people headed to the beach and begin removing debris and rubbish from the shoreline, river, pavements and waterways.

The team worked tirelessly, united by a vision of reinstating the shoreline to its natural glory. All kinds of litter, from bottles, plastic, and polystyrene to tin foil and more, was loaded into bags and taken away for disposal.

AfriForum Margate branch youth official, Wynand Kirchner, thanked everyone for taking time out on a Sunday to help the environment.

“The litter was more than we imagined and I am so impressed with my team that helped with the clean-up. We definitely need more of these beach clean-ups in future in order to prevent this unwanted waste from entering our beaches and harming our marine life.”
