Umtamvuna Views: Diarise and attend these important meetings
Locals are invited to showcase arts, crafts and talents at the annual Mpenjati Eco-Festival.
LEISURE Bay Ratepayers’ Association’s AGM takes place at the Leisure Bay municipal offices on Thursday, December 13, at 5pm. Residents and visiting homeowners are urged to attend this important meeting, which offers an ideal opportunity to informally meet councillors, committee members and fellow residents and homeowners.

Conservancy AGM
The Leisure Bay Conservancy will hold its AGM at the Leisure Bay Civic Centre on Monday, December 17, at 5pm. This year’s meeting includes a first-hand account from a few young surfers who rescued a baby whale from shark nets recently. All interested locals are welcome. After some formalities and guest speakers, there is a ‘little surprise’ and finally snacks while getting to know one another. For more information contact Jenny Koen at 082 8573363.
Fun family festival
Another date to remember is the Mpenjati Eco-Festival (organised by the Mpenjati honorary officers) on Sunday, December 16. The philosophy behind the festival is ‘the environment is where we all meet and the aim is to create awareness around the importance of eco-friendly living.’ The festival aims to educate and inspire people to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle and takes place at the family-friendly environment in the beautiful Mpenjati Nature Reserve. There will be walks, children’s activities, music and interesting talks. Locals are also invited to showcase arts, crafts and talents. Contact Anna Jordan at 071 4220773 or Tracy Taylor at 071 3490718.
Happily ensconced
Newlyweds Pat and Rob Lyle have taken quite a few leaps of faith lately. Apart from joining their lives together in marriage in August, they recently moved from a large home in Leisure Bay into Banners Rest Village.
And, in another bold step, they have bought a car wash in the middle of Port Edward. Rob relocated to Port Edward from Nelspruit five years ago and Pat arrived from Durban to join him two years later.
They soon got involved in the Port Edward Bowling Club where Rob is chairman. Pat was ‘forced’ to learn the game and has become extremely proficient! The couple are happily ensconced and love living by the sea.
Stock up
As we creep (or is it fly?) towards Christmas there is an exciting vibe in the air! Shopping malls are decorated for Christmas and carols welcome shoppers warmly. The usual vast festive spreads (on tables and tummies) are enjoyed in excess and frazzled matric pupils can finally see the end of their scholastic endeavours. It is almost school holidays and locals are reminded to stock up on groceries – and a fair amount of patience.
Beach permits
We live in paradise on the South Coast and trust that holidaymakers have good weather, smiling, friendly locals and a generally wonderful holiday. Remember that when we relax, criminals are wide awake, so remember to take every precaution to safeguard yourself and your belongings. Also, don’t forget to obtain a car beach entry permit from the tourism office at Mac Banana and free black bags from the municipal offices in Leisure Bay (at the top of Fisherman’s Drive) on Fridays. Remember to take along your rates account.
