Herald Fishing: Bait up for shad

The rock and surf scene is starting to get properly hot with reports flooding in of inedibles being caught.

Shad season re-opens this Saturday, December 1. As always, remember your limits and respect the species.

Reports have been coming in from along the entire coast of numerous catches, everything from bronze bream, pompano to grey sharks.

Bronze bream are still very much on the bite and they particularly enjoy the discoloured water.

Cracker shrimps works best for bronze bream and kob in these conditions.

Chokka and prawn are going to be the two most important baits to have in your bait box.

Baits of choice are going to be either prawn by itself, blob baits or a mix of the two.

Look for some working water, either near some rocks or a sandbank.

For the brusher you are going to want to use a crab and place it in some rough working water in a rocky gully or ledge.

The dirty water is still around and the inedibles seem to be loving it.

There are reports of anglers fishing in estuaries having a lot of fun catching rock salmon, kingfish and grunter, especially on very warm days.

This is a great time of year for the bass. They are feeding with extra vigour and aggressively attacking most of the bigger baits or topwaters.

The past week has not held the best of weather but that hasn’t stopped many of the anglers from trying.

Those who did brave the weather were rewarded quite nicely with decent specimens of bass from the bank as well as the boat.

Tight lines and screaming reels.
