Rousing tribute to Scotland’s St Andrew

Margate Pipes and Drums provided suitable entertainment.

St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland and his feast day celebrated on November 30 every year.

On the local front, the South Coast Caledonian Society hosted a St Andrew’s Day gathering at Café Munro, Margate Retirement Village last Friday.

With bagpipe music, provided by Margate Pipes and Drums, setting the tone, guests were royally entertained.

Over the years, the Caledonian Society has added invaluable elements to the culture of the South Coast.

Betty and John Sutton look forward to some St Andrew’s Day revelry.

With their intricate, hugely entertaining cultural identity, most agreed that the Caledonian Society has some of the most interesting members of the Rainbow Nation.

Piper Charles Carr pointed out that St Andrew is also the patron saint of Romania, Greece, Russia, Ukraine and Poland.

“The Scots culture is so colourful and interesting that many non-Scots often join them in celebrations. Highland dancing, pipe bands and glorious whisky-tasting evenings are all part of the Scottish experience in South Africa,” he explained.
