Under the gavel in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court

One of the many cases dealt with an Umkomaas man who assaulted his mother.

THIS week in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court:

• Two men, aged 42 and 46, were arrested at Mtunzi Park, Scottburgh in October for the manufacturing and distribution of heroin in a joint operation between the Hawks and Durban Organised Crime Investigation, Crime Intelligence and Durban Metro Police. Bail had previously been denied as both had previous convictions, and one has pending cases in Chatsworth. They were kept in police custody until their appearance last Thursday. They are to reappear on December 6 for judgement.

• A man was arrested after stealing a cellphone valued at R1000 in the district of Umzinto. He has previous convictions for housebreaking and robbery, for which he was sentenced to two years and three years’ imprisonment respectively. He has no pending cases. The matter was postponed to December 5 for bail application. He remains in custody.

• On November 28, a man was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in the district of Umzinto. He was also charged with reckless driving. He was released on extended bail and will reappear on January 14. Investigations continue.

• A young man was arrested on November 28 after he assaulted his mother in New Haven, Umkomaas. In July this year, his mother was granted a protection order. He has been charged with violating this order and for the assault, which involved him slapping his mother. He remains in custody pending the verification of his home address.
