RNM and Unisa entered into a memorandum of understanding to donate land to the university to allow for the development of a Unisa campus.
Unisa vice-chancellor Professor Mandla Makhanya, RNM mayor Cynthia Mqwebu and municipal manager Max Mbili yesterday sealed the deal and shook hands as they celebrated the significant event.
RNM will donate erf 1216 and portion 2 of erf 1215 in Uvongo for the new campus.
According to the RNM Facebook page, the land in question is a portion of the former Uvongo Bird Park next to Douglas Mitchell sports ground.
The news has been widely welcomed by students and local residents on social media, with many saying that this was a milestone achievement.
According to a statement from Unisa, the land donation will better able Unisa to assist students in the future.
“The purpose of the land donation is to improve service delivery. This will enable previously disadvantaged communities to access education. It will also help align services and infrastructure development in the region and enhance key partnerships.”
Mr Mbili said RNM was very excited about the developments as they will improve access to education locally. He said more details would be released in due course.
