Toys bring smiles to children

A gift is a comfort to a child, some of whom will spend Christmas alone.

Margate Bowling Club and Ex-Pro member Johnny Louch are doing the South Coast proud.

Mr Louch recently received a Lifetime Achievement award for his outstanding charity work and this December, the ‘local hero’ did it again.

More than 1000 toys were collected by the bowlers and the Rotary Club of Shelly Beach teamed up with the club to wrap, sort and distribute the toys to organisations which support underprivileged children as part of their annual ‘Toys for Joy’ Christmas project.

At a special lunch last Sunday, the bowlers arranged the toys in front of a large Christmas tree at the clubhouse.

Rotary’s assistant district governor Gavin Jepson said the aim was to impart some festive cheer to children.

“This is a wonderful initiative by a well-known bowling fraternity with a strong community service ethic,” he commented.

Mr Louch said the toy collection was well attended this year and was an opportunity for bowlers to see first hand what a difference a toy could make to a child.

“It was a fantastic day. The bowlers were really tremendous. All the toys donated will go towards ensuring needy children on the South Coast have a really special Christmas. Some children spend Christmas alone and a toy becomes a source of comfort.”
