Bad behaviour causes concern

The couple's concern is not only for the pain and suffering the wildlife has to endure, but also the treat posed to others in the neighbourhood.

Martin and Brenda Janse van Rensburg, who live in Auben Road, Umtentweni, have had enough of what they say is the inconsiderate behaviour of others in their neighbourhood.

Martin recently found pellets from an air rifle in his yard, and several golf balls have ended up on his premises. The windscreen of a car parked in Mkhuhlwa Crescent was also reportedly smashed by an errant golf ball last week.

In the wake of these incidents, Martin said he was now sending out a warning to those discharging air rifles or hitting golf balls into other people’s properties.

“We are offering a reward to anyone who can provide us with evidence, preferably video or photographic. The person who provides this may remain anonymous.”

Brenda and Martin believe the air gun pellets may be the result of someone shooting at monkeys. The couple say they have taken many injured monkeys to Tracy Rowles at the Umsizi Vervet Rescue Centre in Umkomaas.

“When you shoot an animal you don’t kill it instantly, but instead leave it to die a slow painful death, or live a life with injuries. Animals aren’t programmed to be careful of guns,” said Brenda.

Martin added, “It is illegal to discharge any firearm in a residential area. We will not tolerate it anymore and want to hand those responsible over to the police.”

The couple’s concern is not only for the pain and suffering the wildlife has to endure, but also the treat posed to others in the neighbourhood.

“What if I am in my garden with my five-year-old grandchild, and she is hit by a golf ball? ‘Sorry’ is not going help if she loses an eye or is hit on the head,” said Martin.
