Ugu Cluster Commander, Major General Sethenya Nxamagele welcomed the newly appointed officers at Brackenmoor Hotel in Uvongo, saying she was pleased to have the added manpower, especially over the festive season where they had been optimally used to ensure safety of all South Coasters and visitors.
The contingent of new officers is made up of 2 370 men and 1 331 women.
These officers are the third intake to graduate from the revised Basic Police Training Learning Programme which was introduced in 2016.
The programme comprises an induction phase of one month, which is intended to familiarise trainees with the police station environment and the overall basic activities of the Community Service Centres.
Trainees then move on to one of the SAPS training academies for a period of eight months where they are trained as police officers.
This programme is a combination of practical and theoretical training.
Once completed, they are then deployed as fully-fledged constables to various police stations across the country, where they serve a one-year probation period, which is also seen as in-service training.
Police Minister Bheki Cele encouraged the new recruits to be upstanding officers in their communities and continue with the fight against gender-based violence.
The next intake is due to commence training in February/March 2019.
