Bodies stack up at Park Rynie mortuary

At present, pathologists are apparently examining just one or two bodies a day.

Although the provincial ‘go slow’ by forensic pathologists is technically over, the Park Rynie state mortuary is still facing a huge backlog.

Workers are back at their posts after a court order and an ultimatum by KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health Sibongiseni Dhlomo, who said that if employees did not return to work, they would face arrest.

However, the 27 bodies currently in the mortuary have reportedly not been examined since December.

Employees are complaining of poor working conditions, with issues including non-functioning air conditioners and a lack of soap among their grievances.

According to an anonymous source, one of the pathologists refused to conduct autopsies as he did not have a typist to type up his reports.

Dr Dhlomo was contacted for comment on Thursday, January 10.

An automated email reply was received, stating that he was experiencing problems with his email address and referring all correspondence to his personal assistant, Zamokuhle Zondi.

Efforts made to contact both parties yielded no results at the time of going to print.
