Arrests made in Ramsgate pensioner’s murder

Two men are in custody.

The two men suspected of robbing and murdering James Joseph Gunn (72) at his Perch Road, Ramsgate home on December 15 have been arrested.

His son, who lives overseas, became concerned after several attempts to contact his father, who lived alone, were unsuccessful.

He called on Mr Gunn’s neighbour for help.

When the neighbour went to check on Mr Gunn, he found the elderly man tied up in the lounge.

He had been stabbed in the head.

A cellphone and laptop were stolen. Mr Gunn was taken to Netcare Margate Hospital in critical condition.

He was later transferred to a Durban hospital where he died.

Last Tuesday, Margate detectives responded swiftly to information received regarding the whereabouts of the two men suspected of being involved.

Police spokesman, Sergeant Sibu Ncane said, “Detective Warrant Officer Michael Welsh, Sergeant Bonginkosi Mbhele, Sgt Michelle van Niekerk, Constable Sandile Xolo and Sgt Senzo Mlambo followed up on information and arrested the two men, aged 28 and 32 years respectively, in Ramsgate.

“The suspects were charged with murder and detained. They appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week and the case was postponed to January 21. They remain in police custody.”

Margate station commander, Brigadier William Slabbert commended the work done to ensure that the suspects were brought to book.

Woman raped

A woman was raped in Manaba on December 12. She had travelled from Johannesburg to Margate to meet a man she believed was about to propose marriage. The woman asked to be taken home after an evening out with the man but he refused and took her to his home where he assaulted and raped her.

The woman escaped the following day and contacted the police.

On December 14, Margate detectives arrested and charged a 35-year-old man. He appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court and was released on bail. He is due to appear again next Friday, January 25.

Assault

In a separate case in Uvongo on December 11, a woman (60) became involved in an argument with her employee (49). During the course of the disagreement, the employee struck his employer with a spade. The woman suffered bruising to the right leg.

The employee was arrested and charged. He appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court and was released on bail . He is due to appear next Tuesday, January 22.
