Three arrested for Harding armed robbery

The robbers fired shots at the police..

Three armed men robbed a tavern in Harding on Monday this week.

Police spokesman, Sergeant Sibi Ncane said the men entered the tavern pretending to be customers.

“Two of the men then pointed firearms at patrons, telling them to lie down. The tavern owner was held at gunpoint by the third man. The robbers fled with a substantial sum of money.”

Constables Joel Shusha, Asekho Sakwe, Mboneni Mbutho, Bukiwe Cwele and Musa Mkhonde were alerted and a high-speed chase on the N2 ensued.

“Shots were fired at the officers, damaging the police vehicle. The officers however continued their pursuit and eventually managed to apprehend the suspects. Three men, aged 34, 45 and 46 years respectively, were arrested and two firearms and a knife were recovered,” said Sgt Ncane.

The three men appeared in the Harding Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Wednesday) and the case was postponed for further investigation.

Harding station commander, Colonel Hendrina Grundlingh, commended the officers on the quick arrests and warned would-be criminals that police will not hesitate to pursue, arrest and bring them before the courts to face trial for their criminal activities.
