NPO welcomes mining in Xolobeni

NPO spokesman Sifiso Ndovela said there are three prospects for economic development within the area, these being agriculture, eco-tourism and sustainable mining.

THE Xolobeni Youth for Sustainable Development NPO has vowed to do all it can to encourage investment in the area in order to provide job opportunities for young people.

The NPO has pointed out that the Bill of Rights, which is entrenched in the Constitution, makes it clear that citizens should protect their environment and secure only sustainable development and justifiable economic and social development.

NPO spokesman Sifiso Ndovela said there are three prospects for economic development within the area, these being agriculture, eco-tourism and sustainable mining.

“All these projects can and will co-exist. We invite the department of agriculture to assist small scale farmers with resources and access to markets. We invite the tourism department to secure eco-tourism projects in our area and also call upon the department of mineral resources to facilitate sustainable mining.

“We will listen to anyone who is not opposed to a development agenda as we want what is in the best interests of young people. About 80 percent of young people in the Xolobeni area are unemployed,” said Mr Ndovela.

He added that the government had ‘taken too long’ to decide on the mining issue.

“We call on the government to be decisive as many young people here are unemployed and ready to work. The government should not hesitate to act in support of development. No one in Xolobeni would refuse the opportunity of employment.”

Mr Ndovela was referring to the High Court ruling in Pretoria which recently dismissed the mining application, saying that the community had the right to say ‘no’ to mining.

However, mineral resources minister Gwede Mantashe has appealed that decision and met with the ACC last Wednesday.

“We welcome a visit from mineral resources minister Gwede Mantashe and other ministers and authorities who want to pursue our economic development agenda,” said Mr Ndovela.
