Rabies case reported in Scottburgh

Pet owners are urged to have their pets vaccinated. Failure to do so could result in a fine.

A Scottburgh vet is urging pet owners to have their animals vaccinated after a dog tested positive for rabies last week.

According to Dr Debisha Subramanian of Scott Vet, a man brought in his pet after becoming concerned about the dog’s lack of appetite.

The owner confirmed that the dog had never been inoculated against the deadly disease as he said it was kept on the property at all times and did not come into contact with other animals.

Possible signs of rabies, including the dropping of the jaw, fever and lack of coordination, were noted by the veterinarian.

The dog was euthanised and the state vet conducted tests for rabies.

The test results were positive.

“It is important to realise that rabies can infect any unvaccinated animal, including cats. The virus can still infect pets that are kept within their own yard,” said Dr Subramanian.

The signs of rabies are variable with some animals not showing any typical symptoms.

The law however is quite clear and states that any unvaccinated animal showing symptoms of the virus must be euthanised and tested for rabies.

Annual vaccinations against rabies are recommended, and these can be done for R30 at the SPCA or at any private vet.

The state vet also holds regular free rabies clinics around the South Coast, so watch the press for details.
