SAPS unit is evicted

The sheriff of the High Court served a warrant of ejectment earlier this week.

After a long and drawn-out saga, the Port Shepstone SAPS Vehicle Identification and Safeguarding unit will have to vacate its leased premises in Marburg, where some 200 vehicles are stored, by tomorrow (Friday).

On Monday this week, the sheriff of the High Court served a warrant of ejectment as there were no lease agreements in place and the National Department of Public Works (DPW) had failed to pay rent on occasion.

The unit was given until Tuesday (January 22) to clear out its goods and possessions from the premises, owned by Silver Moon Investments 145cc t/a Ocean Echo Properties.

Yesterday (Wednesday) an urgent meeting with the landlord, Sean Naidoo, and his advocate was called by the DPW.

As a result of the meeting, Mr Naidoo granted the DPW an extension until tomorrow, Friday, January 25.

If the SAPS unit has not found alternative premises by this time, the sheriff will act as per the court order and remove occupants and their belongings from Mr Naidoo’s property.

This ejectment will see the SAPS Rescue unit, Vehicle Identification and Safeguarding unit and the Tactical Response and Training unit (which serves the entire Umzimkhulu area as well as Port Shepstone) without a base for their operations.

“I have not been paid rent for 20 months. This is an unlawful occupation of my property by DPW. I am glad that the courts have ruled that a tenant who does not pay rent must be evicted,” said Mr Naidoo.

Numerous attempts were made to get comment from both the police and the National Department of Public Works, but no response had been received at the time of going to press.
