Snake City duo ‘meet and greet’ in aid of local organisation
SerendiPitty Rescue stepped in and worked tirelessly to resolve the situation.
THE British-born snake-rescuing duo – Simon Keys and Siouxsie Gillett – will be on the rugby field at Amanzimtoti Sports’ Centre at Hutchison Park on Sunday, February 3 from 10am to 1pm, for a fun meet-and-greet event. This is in support of the non-profit organisation, SerendiPitty Rescue, a Scottburgh-based Pit Bull rescue group. Simon and Siouxsie, stars of the popular television show, Nat Geo Wild’s Snake City, are avid supporters of this KwaZulu-Natal-based organisation which rescues abused, abandoned and homeless Pit Bull-type dogs. All proceeds from the day will go directly to SerendiPitty Rescue for the necessary care of these dogs.

“We are really looking forward to this event which we hope will raise lots of money and awareness for SerendiPitty Rescue” said Siouxsie. “Aside from our love of snakes, we have a great love for all animals, especially Pit Bulls which – just like snakes – are misunderstood. SerendiPitty Rescue does amazing work which is why we have committed to supporting them.”
Simon and Siouxsie were introduced to the organisation when they found two abandoned terriers on a property in eMdloti, close to where they live. SerendiPitty Rescue stepped in and worked tirelessly to resolve the situation. Simon and Siouxsie spent part of last year back in the United Kingdom and it was while they were there that they encountered a young philanthropist who managed to raise R6 000 for SerendiPitty Rescue. This was used to pay for the medical care of both dogs.
Started by Scottburgh local David Hardwick, Nicole Jack and Candice Webber in August 2018, SerendiPitty Rescue’s first project was Oliver, a two-year-old Pit Bull stray who had suffered severe abuse, possibly as a result of illegal dog fighting. SerendiPitty Rescue shared Oliver’s story online and was fortunate to receive assistance from a couple who funded his medical treatments. Oliver will be in attendance at the meet-and-greet fundraiser, showing off his loving nature and demonstrating what can be achieved by this organisation.
“We are dedicated to the rescue and protection of all abandoned and abused Pit Bulls,” said David.
“For every dog we rescue, there is a comprehensive adoption process and we place each dog in a compassionate home with a clear understanding of the breed. All our rescue dogs are sterilised and provided with the necessary medical treatment before being homed. We rely solely on donations from the public for these lifesaving missions and we are so grateful to Simon and Siouxsie for their assistance in fundraising and awareness.”
Visitors to the SerendiPitty Rescue fundraiser will get to meet Simon and Siouxsie for a chat, autograph and photo opportunity. The pair will also have a variety of snake species at the event, which will be included in a demonstration of these interesting animals. The friendly Pit Bull rescue Oliver will be manning the kissing photo booth. There will also be a number of food stalls and craft beer stands available on the day.
Tickets are available on the day and the price is R60 for adults and R20 for children.
