Umtamvuna Views: Postbox yields a special delivery

All five kitties and the very young mommy will make wonderful pets.

A FEW weeks ago, staff at Port Edward Post Office were surprised to find a very different kind of delivery. Inside one of the unused post boxes, accessed only from inside the premises, a small mommy cat had secured a safe spot to house her five newborn kittens. A caring person contacted Dr Dave Watson and the homeless family was transferred to a comfy cage at the vet’s premises.

Under the watchful eye of Dave and his wife Julia, the skinny little mother cat (probably no more than six months old herself) fattened up and provided lots of milk for her babies. Although not totally feral when brought in, the mother has become affectionate and loving. Her babies also enjoy being handled and petted and are ready to go to caring ‘forever’ homes. The mommy would also make a wonderful pet. If anyone can adopt any of these little ‘vagabonds’, please contact Dr Watson at 039 3112042.

Eli goes AWOL

Eli is an 18 month old small crossbreed who belongs to Gary Bircher and his family in Port Edward. About a week ago, Eli was travelling in the car with some family members near the Munster Shopping Complex, when he became over excited about something spectacular outside the car. In his excitement he fell out and was so traumatised by the fall that he ran off into the nearby farmlands. The family and security staff spent many hours trying to find Eli, but to no avail. Every day the search continued. Posters were displayed offering a substantial reward and notices and photographs were posted on social media. Still there was no sign of the little dog and the family was devastated.

Joyous reunion

Four days after going missing, Eli was found by a farm worker not far from where he had run off. The Birchers rushed off to collect him – with an emotional reunion when he arrived back home.

Lindi and Gary Bircher of Port Edward were extremely relieved to be reunited with 18 month old Eli.

Daughter Megan received the greatest present ever, being her 18th birthday the next day! The family extends a huge thank you to the community for showing so much love, care and effort to help bring Eli home.

Social Bridge

Southbroom Bridge Club has been running for about 30 years. With competition from computer bridge opponents, many other available social activities and the cost of petrol, numbers have been dwindling. About 30 keen social bridge players gather every Thursday morning at the Southbroom Country Club for a morning of brain-testing duplicate bridge.

Southbroom Bridge Club members (from left) Marge Munsie, Margie Bartlett, Pam Williams and Colleen Eccles get down to serious bids and lead tricks at their bridge game at the Southbroom Country Club last week.

The club is looking for new members and any level of players are welcome to join. For more information, contact Jeanne Powell on 072 2196464. There is also a small Port Edward club which meets on a Wednesday afternoon for social duplicate bridge needing more players. Contact Eileen O’Keeff at 071 9859454.

Oot on the skite

Last Friday, the Munster Bowling Club held a fun afternoon of bowls, followed by supper. The theme was ‘Highland Fling’ and many arrived in tartans and sporrans.

Munster Bowling Club laddies and lassies (from left) Barbara Corbett, Cliff and Margaret Moakes, Jean longden and Rick Harding had a great time at the club’s ‘Highland Fling’ social dinner last Friday.

Long-standing member Riddell Weir (83), who rolled out many Scottish jokes, generously sponsored the prizes and the supper. About 40 guests enjoyed haggis disguised as meat loaf (or the other way round) with turnips and pumpkin. Delicious!
