Hibberdene Happenings: Eye clinic dates are set

New optometrist Kausar Mohamed Essop will be taking over in February.

GOOD news is that eye clinic dates for 2019 have been set and the first one will be on Wednesday, February 20, from noon onwards. Please book with your scribe at either the supplied number or 073 1653961 as soon as possible, as traditionally the first clinic of the year is extremely busy.

No word has been received of an increase in costs, so presumably charges will remain the same as last year.

And please honour your appointment – by not arriving for your booking, you are depriving someone else of the opportunity to have their eyes attended to.

Welcome and thanks

New optometrist Kausar Mohamed Essop, who will be taking over in February, is warmly welcomed and grateful thanks are extended to Brian Williams for many years of excellent and loyal service – the very reason the clinic has become so popular.

Breakfast kicks off

This coming Saturday (February 2) sees the Methodist Church’s men’s breakfast take place (at the church) at 7am. The cost is only R20 per person and men of any denomination are welcome to attend. Confirm your attendance with either Debbie at 039 6992948 (mornings only) or Louis at 039 6992610 before tomorrow (Thursday, January 31).

Shocking theft

Debbie Fletcher, secretary at the Methodist Church had her cellphone stolen last week, by the very people she was seeking accommodation and help for – what a way to reward someone’s kindness! Supposedly homeless, hungry and living on the beach, the family had come to the church for help and, while Debbie was out of her office for a few minutes, the phone and the culprits disappeared. When she realised her phone was missing, she made her way to the beach where Gladiator Security guard Collin Mzobe confirmed that a man had indeed tried to sell the phone to him before asking for directions to the taxi rank.

Be on the lookout

Collin enlisted the help of Protection Services member Kisten Moodley and the two of them apprehended the man responsible for the theft, forced him to point out the taxi and actually retrieved the phone!

Debbie is extremely grateful to both Collin and Kisten and warns people to be careful of a 30 to 40 year-old woman accompanied by two teenage boys, and a man of about 30 – they are not to be trusted.

Grow your own

Area upliftment

Somebody has spent a lot of time trying to beautify Hibberdene by planting palm and other saplings in the areas along the R102 in the vicinity of the bus stop and along Riviera Highway. Those responsible, a mystery at present, are warmly thanked – as once established, the trees are going to make a huge difference.

Do you know?

What is the purpose of the huge piles of railway sleepers heaped up at Mtwalume and old Hibberdene station – and various other places along the line? Some appear to have been used, but no one seems to know exactly what is going on. Several queries have been received and everyone would like to know what exactly the purpose of these sleepers is going to be?

Seeking the Cochmans

Your scribe is anxious to contact Kathleen and Richard Cochman, believed to be in the Southport area. Their spectacles, ordered at the eye clinic and awaiting collection since before Christmas, have not been collected and all attempts to contact their cellphone numbers have been in vain. Perhaps they have changed phone numbers or left the area? If anyone can help, it would be highly appreciated.

Happy birthday

Birthday wishes for the week go to Susan Cooke (30th), Ben van der Merwe (31st), your scribe’s son Greg in Witbank (February 2), Callie Quinn (3rd), Clive Knights (4th), René Calitz and Louis Nortjé (5th).

Remember to keep Lizzie busy with Hibberdene news and snippets.
