Umtamvuna Views: ‘Gentle Stephen’ leaves a void

The community mourns the unnecessary death of yet another one of its youngsters and grieves with the family.

STEPHEN Nel (32) of Munster died tragically last week. He was the younger son of Liz Kinsey and Anthony Nel. Stephen had struggled stoically for many years with drug addiction and returned with his young family to the South Coast to get his life back on track. He had successfully managed the Total garage at Kingfisher Motors in Margate for more than three years. He grew up in Port Edward and attended Port Edward Primary and completed his high schooling at DHS.

Three cheers for John

local builder/farmer John Harrison, celebrated his birthday on January 30. He is the elder son of long-term Port Edward residents, Gordon and Peggy Harrison. His birthday party was held at the Marlin Ski-boat Club last Saturday and about 30 friends and family enjoyed a beef-butt on the spit. It was a festive evening with the best view in town!

Life begins at 40

Birthday wishes also go to local farmer Darrel Wichmann, who turned 40 on February 3.

Darrel Wichmann (second from left) had a blast celebrating his 40th birthday with family members and old friends (from left) Desmond Wichmann, Karl Shultz and Teddy Braithwaite last week.

Darrel is a Port Edwardian through and through, having attended the local primary school, followed by Weston Agricultural College near Mooi River. Darrel now manages the macadamia farm where he grew up with parents Edgar and Lyn and sisters Linda and Nicky. He celebrated his new ‘mature status’ with a party at TO Strand last Saturday that catered for about 100 guests. By all accounts it became a ‘weekend party!’

Elise turns 80

The Treehuggers walking group enjoyed a special gathering and picnic lunch last Tuesday. About 15 ‘greenies’ met at Mbabala Lodge in Munster and walked around the lovely dam on the property, ablaze with blue water lilies.

‘Treehuggers’ member Elise Airey celebrated her 80th birthday with friends at a picnic at Mbabala Lodge in Munster last week. Friend Louis Fourie wishes Elise a happy birthday.

A lovely picnic followed under the trees, which was a celebration of the 80th birthday of Elise Airey. Elise is a fine example to all older women – she looks 15 years younger and is always keen for a brisk walk and socialising with friends.
