South Coast cricket team involved in highway crash
The vehicle hit the road barrier and rolled down a bank.
A number of Southern KwaZulu-Natal cricketers, returning home from Durban last Sunday afternoon, were involved in what could have been a horrific accident on the highway near Mtwalume.
The taxi they were driving in rolled down an embankment after a collision with a bakkie.
The team had played East Coast in Phoenix and slumped to its first defeat this season.
That paled into insignificance compared to the players’ ordeal on the way home.

“We were about 20 minutes away from the Port Shepstone Country Club, near Mtwalume, when it happened,” said one of the players, Mzekelo Dingane.

“There were eight or nine of the team in the taxi. The hit came and the taxi swayed and swayed and then smashed into the barrier. It flipped and rolled down the bank about five times.”
Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt, although they did experience the inevitable whiplash. The players were taken to hospital to have their injuries assessed.
“Some of the players had X-rays taken but mostly it seems it was a case of bruises and bumps. Thank God we’re all alive,” said Dingane.
The driver of the other vehicle also escaped unharmed.
Five of the players will have to rest from cricket for a while though, to recover, which significantly depletes the team ahead of a home fixture this Sunday.
