Missing Umzinto woman was murdered

Police uncovered her remains, as well as several personal items and documents.

The skeletal remains of Nolwazi Kunene (23) from Umzinto, who was reported missing earlier this year, have been recovered by the Umzinto Saps.

In January Ms Kunene left the family home in Hlokozi to return to her Nkonka informal settlement residence.

She informed family members that she had returned safely.

A friend of hers became suspicious days later when she failed to arrive at work and could not be located at her home. A missing persons case was opened at Umzinto Saps.

Police investigations led to a man being taken in for questioning. He revealed that he had assisted another man, known to the woman, to dispose of her body.

Port Shepstone Saps communications officer, Captain Petros Mpinge said that on February 11, a man had handed himself over to the police and showed them where they could find Ms Kunene’s body.

Police uncovered her remains, as well as several personal items and documents.

Two men, aged 26 and 20, have been charged with murder. They appeared in the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court on February 12 and 13.

A bail application hearing has been set for February 22.
