Hibberdene Happenings: Flipping good pancakes next week

Pancake mix and cooks will be provided - just bring your own sweet or savoury filling and a drink of your choice.

ALL roads will lead to the Methodist Church next Tuesday, March 5, at 5pm, when Shrove Tuesday will be observed. Pancake mix and cooks will be provided – just bring your own sweet or savoury filling and a drink of your choice.

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday (the beginning of Lent) and is traditionally a day when all the rich, fatty foods, not to be consumed during the sombre period of Lent, should be used up. It is also a period of confessing sins and receiving absolution.

Early bird breakfast

Men of all denominations are welcome to attend the men’s breakfast to be held at the Methodist Church this Saturday, March 2, at 7am. The cost is only R20 per person, so join in for a morning of fellowship, fun and food, and take along a friend or two. To facilitate catering, kindly notify Debbie at 039 6992948 or Louis at 039 6992610.

Day of prayer

Traditionally the first Friday in March is observed as ‘Women’s World Day of Prayer’ throughout the world, but unfortunately no combined service will be held in Hibberdene this year. This is indeed regrettable, but apparently due to circumstances beyond control. However, there will be several services in neighbouring towns, which all women are welcome to attend.

Popular market

Contact Sue Paterson at 039 9721425 to reserve a table at the next Mtwalume flea and craft market to be held alongside the pool area at Koelwaters Resort on Saturday, March 30, from 9am.

There is always a festive atmosphere at these markets, with music and a lovely selection of goods on sale.

An added bonus is that tables are free of charge, so make your reservation as soon as possible.

Fare thee well

Debbie Fletcher was thrilled to receive a visit from son Warren van Zyl from Pretoria recently. Warren is moving to Dubai shortly and it was the last time (for a while) that he would be able to see Debbie and her husband, Rod. Warren is wished well in his new venture. Greer and Doug Henderson are off sightseeing shortly. During their time away, they will visit the iconic town of Clarens in the Free State and are wished a wonderful holiday.

Clinic update

March’s eye clinic is already fully booked and April’s will be held on Wednesday (17th) from noon. Many people are under the impression that the clinic falls under the auspices of the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital, but this is not the case. It is a completely separate entity, run by the Lions Club of Hibberdene and the Lions’ Operation BrightSight and, as such, there are certain regulations that need to be abided by and cannot be changed, no matter what. Bookings can be made with your scribe at the supplied number or at 073 1653961.

Milestone birthdays

Two special birthdays take place this week – Lynn Webster celebrated her 80th on February 26 and she and her husband Trevor were thrilled to have a fleeting visit from their daughter Robyn Thorne, from Staines, Surrey, UK. Robyn leaves again today (Wednesday), so it was indeed a short, but treasured visit. And Sham Jagaroo, who must be the youngest-looking sexagenarian in Hibberdene, celebrates her 60th birthday next Sunday, March 3. Happy birthday Sham, from your many customers and friends.
