Power theft continues in Masinenge

Wiring used in illegal connections is usually not insulated, which adds to the danger.

Electrical cables continue to be illegally laid across Quarry Road near the Masinenge informal settlement.

These cables are connected to an Eskom transformer which then supplies free power to thousands of people living in the settlement.

According to one Uvongo resident, illegal connections are an ongoing problem in Quarry Road, and very little seems to be done by Eskom or the police to curb the crime.

Wiring used in illegal connections is usually not insulated and is often thrown across roadways, pathways and in the veld.

This is extremely dangerous as even small levels of current can kill people. Most victims of electrocutions resulting from illegal connections are children and toddlers.

“I am amazed that no one has been electrocuted at this spot as yet. The illegal cable is in the path of customers visiting a supermarket. Eskom is doing nothing and it’s only a matter of time before we hear of a death,” said the resident.

Eskom was approached for comment but had not responded at the time of going to print.
