At the rally, the party’s leader, Julius Malema spoke out against corruption, the shooting of students during protests and poor wages for general workers, among many other issues.

Mr Malema said that if police were serious about fighting crime they should not shoot innocent students but should rather arrest corrupt government officials and those linked to political murders.

He also told supporters that corruption in government was so deeply entrenched that even the president could not fix it.

“Dislodging the current government from power is the best way to honor my friend who was killed for exposing corruption.”

Mr Malema was referring to former ANCYL leader Sindiso Magaqa who was killed in an ambush at Umzimkhulu in July 2017.

He also condemned employers who still pay general workers a pittance.

“Our people should be paid proper salaries and not with food, groceries and old clothes. We don’t want our people to be paid peanuts. We want our people to be paid properly.”

During the launch, an array of entertainment from performers including Kelly Khumalo, Babes Wodumo, Lvovo, Big Nuz star Danger and others kept supporters in good spirits

According to the party’s Ugu region secretary Mpume Mbono membership in the region had increased from 9 000 to 32 000 since the 2016 elections.
