EFF marches for water

EFF chairman Ncedo Njenga said the party demanded that Ugu provide a clear turn-around strategy for uninterrupted and clean water supply for all.

Members of the EFF painted Port Shepstone CBD red during their march to Ugu District Municipality on Thursday last week.

The marchers were demanding proper water services for all South Coast communities affected by ongoing outages.

Included in the memorandum of grievances handed over to Ugu mayor Mondli Chiliza were service delivery, corruption and the awarding of section 36 contracts (which allow officials to bypass the normal tender processes).

EFF chairman Ncedo Njenga said the party demanded that Ugu provide a clear turn-around strategy for uninterrupted and clean water supply for all.

He added that water was a basic service and constitutional right for everyone living on the South Coast, and demanded transparency from Ugu on the awarding of section 36 contracts.

The group prepares to march to the Ugu District municipality offices last Thursday.

Reading from the memo, EFF provincial leader Marshall Dlamini said the South Coast is a popular destination for holidaymakers, but due to the ongoing water crisis the tourism industry had been compromised.

This, in turn, had affected the income of many workers whose families relied on this income.

“The recent failure of the current Ugu leadership to adequately address the water crisis in Harding further proves blatant disregard for human life. We demand that Ugu ensure that water cuts are done with proper planning.”

EFF members march to demand improved water services.

The EFF also claimed that water tanker services were nothing but a ploy to enrich those in power.

“When we are told there is no water, water tankers are outsourced all the way from Ethekwini. The question is who is benefiting? We say this because those tankers do not come filled with water, instead they collect water from the South Coast meaning we do have water,” said Mr Njenga.

Cllr Chiliza accepted the memorandum on behalf of Ugu, and the municipality was given 14 days to respond..

EFF members chant and sing while waiting for the mayor outside the Ugu District Municipality offices in Port Shepstone last Thursday.

Yesterday (Wednesday) Ugu spokesman France Zama said the municipality was still looking at some of the issues raised by the EFF in the memorandum. It would, he said, be in contact with the party and issue a response within the time stipulated.
