Rabies confirmed on South Coast

Both animals were tested by the state vet and the results were positive.

The Lower South Coast SPCA has recently dealt with two confirmed cases of rabies.

The first was a stray black Labrador found in Southbroom on March 27, and the second was another stray, an Africanis found in Gcilima (near Southbroom) on Monday this week.

Lauren Ferreira, spokesman for the LSC SPCA said both these dogs exhibited clear symptoms of rabies when they arrived at SPCA.

“Great care was taken in handling these animals and both were immediately humanely euthanased and sent to the state vet for testing. It is beyond imperative that the community is aware of the severity of this disease and how close to home it can strike. We urge everyone to make sure to vaccinate their pets as soon as possible.”

She said the organisation depended on the community’s support and donations to allow them to fund rabies and vaccination specials.

Even just a small amount towards this programme would make a difference, she said.

The SPCA offers rabies vaccinations from Monday to Friday between 8am and 4pm and on Saturdays from 9am to noon at a minimal cost of R30 per pet.
