All things Scottish celebrated at Robbie Burns’ lunch

Scots and South Coasters of Scottish descent gathered to honour the great bard, Robert Burns.

Those who were looking for a wee bit of Scottish flair headed to the South Coast Caledonian Society’s Burns’ Nicht celebrations at Margate Retirement Village last Saturday.

Scots and South Coasters of Scottish descent gathered to honour the great Scottish bard, Robert Burns. Over the years, the Caledonian Society has added invaluable elements to the culture of the South Coast and this luncheon was no different. With bagpipe music in the background, the Caledonian Society celebrated this event in fine style.

Fans agreed that the Caledonian Society boasts some of the most interesting members of the rainbow nation. Charles Carr, a bagpiper from the Caledonian Society, said that the Scots culture is so colourful and interesting that many non-Scots often join them in their celebrations. “Highland dancing, pipe bands, military tattoos, Burns Night, chasing the haggis around the room and eating it and glorious whisky-tasting evenings are all part of the Scottish experience in South Africa,” he said.

He went on to say that the purpose of the Caledonian Society is to preserve and teach the culture, history, heraldry, pageantry, music, literature, arts and crafts of Scotland.
