Umkomaas Saps team arrests criminals on N2 freeway

Investigations are continuing as these men have been linked to other cases on the South Coast.

Three suspects were arrested on Monday this week after being found in the possession of a stolen firearm as well as other property suspected to be stolen.

Umkomaas Saps Warrant Officer Logan Naidoo and his team were on patrol on the N2 freeway northbound when they noticed a suspicious vehicle.

“The vehicle was a blue Tazz which displayed no registration plates so the officers pulled it over,” said Umkomaas Saps communications officer, Captain Ismail Shaik.

When the policemen approached the vehicle, the passenger in the back seat slumped over so an officer instructed him to sit up. All occupants were then asked to step out of the vehicle.

“When the back seat passenger was searched, he was found to be in possession of a 9mm pistol and a plastic bag containing eight live rounds of ammunition,” said Capt Shaik.

A search of the vehicle revealed several other items which are believed to have been used in the commission of crimes. This included two police bullet proof vests, a South African National Defence Force jacket, cables and 12 cellphones.

Preliminary investigations showed that the firearm recovered was reported stolen during a robbery in Hibberdene.

Investigations continue as these men have been linked to other cases on the South Coast, and because there are still more suspects at large.
